Wonderful Saturday morning with Mooncakes and Tim Sum

After the lunar seventh month comes the mid-Autumn festival (or the mooncake festival). The mid-Autumn festival, 15th day of the eighth month in the lunar calendar, this year falls on 3 October.

Dad has already made plans to buy our usual Teochew mooncakes from the traditional cake house in Geylang, Thye Moh. Each year, without fail, we will have our Teochew mooncakes (sweet tau sar and/or D24 durian). Thye Moh's durian mooncakes usually sell like hot cakes. It's worse when they cannot get the good durians and hence, the stock is limited.

Off we went this morning with dad to Thye Moh. Got stucked at the Aljunied MRT for close to half hour because of the heavy downpour.



Here's the old shop house where dad will buy our mooncakes without fail every year. Once in a while, we will follow him there. He knows the old uncles there after these years.


It's a traditional Teochew cake shop selling all kinds of teochew biscuits and cakes. During my wedding, we ordered our customary teochew cakes from here too.


They also sell the 'Long Feng' (dragon and phoenix) candles that is one of the traditional items for marriage. I am still complaining that I didn't have a pair of these when I got married. That was done away with because we were trying to make everything more simple and straightforward. I heard that with the candles, someone will basically have to ensure that the candles are lit throughout the wedding day as it is extremely inauspicious if the flame goes off.

But I thought the candles would have made the wedding with more feel! Heehee...


These are the teochew mooncakes with the different flavours. They must make sure to pack them only after the cakes cool off completely or else the cakes will get mouldy very quickly.

Tim Sum Lunch

Thank goodness the rain stopped after we have made our mooncakes purchase. We walked out of the street and decided to have our lunch at Ho Kee Pau cafe. They sell tim sum which I had been craving for the past few weeks.

Kong Bak (braised meat) Pao

Century egg porridge. The porridge is very thick which I enjoy very much. The century egg tastes nice and the minced meat has a very nice flavour (sesame oil, I think)

Here's what we had ordered and...didn't finish. Had to pack home the unfinished food. All in all, it was a very nice lunch. Was very full. But I am hungry now again. See you again...am going to hunt for food.
