Christmas Party (A late post)

I know I know, we are coming to Lunar New Year and I am still writing about Christmas. This is something I wanted to post long time ago but have been lazy with the downloading of photos.

My section had our own Christmas party in the office on 23 Dec 2008. The highlight of the party was this roasted de-boned chicken stuffed with wonderful things made by Angeline. Trust me, it's very delicious.

This is it! The yummy deboned chicken. I am really amazed that the chicken is still in one piece and in good shape after being deboned. Doesn't it look tasty?

Starting to cut it. We were all waiting eagerly to taste it.

Coming, coming, we began to see interesting things upon dissecting the roast. The smells was great too. Imagine we were all drooling.

Carefully dissecting while we curious onlookers wondered how long more it would take for us to have the first bite. Quick Quick Quick!

Finally, we got to see the inside. It's mince meat, eggs and I can't remember what else (of course, chicken meat too). Of course the eggs have to be strategically placed so that when you halved the chicken, it's nicely shown. Just like 2 lovely suns on each side.

Serving the star dish. The roast was laced with baby carrots and potatoes.

Here's Angeline with her piece of art. She said that at most she only does this once a year cos it really takes a lot of effort. Guess what, she took half day in the morning just to baked this for us. The baking itself took 2 hours. We were surely lucky to get to taste this dish.

Our other dishes, contributed by different colleagues. Sakae Sushi, courtesy from my boss. Potato salad from Yanfeng. Fruit salad from me. Honey baked ham from Angeline too.

The potato salad is very nice. Yanfeng made this and I have asked her for the method. Am going to do it on second day of Chinese New Year. Only need potatoes, honey baked ham (diced), mayonnaise, bacon bits and a little black pepper.

My fruit salad. This was taught to me by my ex-colleague, Jasmine. The dressing is actually a honey buzz yogurt. I had grapes, green/red apples, a little orange pulps, palm fruit (to replace the nata de coco which I wasn't able to find).

What's Christmas without logcakes? So here's a logcake ordered by Bryan. Heard it's from a very nice bakery (dunno whether it's called Awfully Sinful or Sinfully something...along that line lah).

Our tummies were completely filled and we were trying very hard not to doze off at our desks that afternoon.

Turning point at mid-30s?

Some things have started to change.

And some of these changes seem to be reflected in my thinking and mentality at this point. The same things that I thought I would never change my attitude towards, and things which I strongly disagreed with my parents' or elders' sentiments when I was much younger, well, I seem to be moving towards their directions now.

1. Used to be very sentimental or nostalgic about gifts, souvenirs, etc that I bought for myself from some special places, or which people give as presents. I would keep them for a long, long time even when I am not using them or just keeping them because I don't bear to use them. So, my storage gets bigger and bigger. But now, I have told myself that things which can be used, just used them, no point keeping. Things that I don't use, then do something about them. I feel particularly happy now to get rid of things (I wish I can say the same for nasty people too).

For example, when I got soft toys as gifts in the past, I would keep them aside and my parents would use a plastic sheet to wrap them up and place them on shelf so that they don't get dirty. The soft toys ended up as just display items - left on the shelf kind. But now, I will just throw them onto my bed and hug them as and when I like. When they get dirty, well, so be it. Isn't that the purpose of soft toys? To be carried, hugged, etc....

Similarly, when we got towels as gifts, we kept them in the wardrobe because they are too nice to be used. We started storing until the wardrobe became full and one fine day, we realise these towels have got yellow spots and cannot be used. Why? Can't we just use them in the first place? Keep for what?

2. When I was much younger, I used to get very irritated when people started to criticise this and that. I wonder why are people so negative and full of complaints. I don't understand why they need to criticise about every single policies, every little actions by people, etc.
(For the record, I still feel like that now, just that certain things have changed. I just stand people who keep complaining and complaining about the same thing and everything.)

For example, in the past, when government announced transport fares increase, I would (and still) hear parents, together with the elders in the family/friends, complaining whenever they meet. I don't understand why can't they stop being overly critical for once and why can't they talk about some other nice things and why do they always harp on such things. Now, when the news about price increase, I myself will be irritated (not so much on the increase, but sick of hearing the same old 'reasons' to justify price increases), though I won't join in their usual grumbling sessions because I think their criticisms tend to go overboard sometimes.

The frustration I have now is that people (be it government or some senior management people in an organisation) will have thousands of reasons ready to justify their actions which may not be right or wrong. They just have to find the right justication(s) for the right scenario. For example, organisations may tell staff that there is going to be a salary reduction.Their reasons may be that they need to save costs so that they need not retrench. But when they decide to retrench, there is another set of reasons, which I don't know what those reasons could be.

So, you win when you can use your wonderful reasons to bulldoze your way through. Just like marketing strategies.

3. The lost enthusiasm. In the past, I will eagerly send Christmas/New Year cards, e-cards or even SMSes on the festive seasons to relatives and friends. But now, I realise I have lost that enthusiasm. While I was eager to stay to countdown to New Years, I no longer care now. So what if I slept earlier, even before the clock struck 0:00?? What difference would that make if I had stayed up? Would I get luckier, richer, prettier, healthier the next day, or the next year?

I am now even sick of local programmes (when I used to think why people are so critical and not supportive of our local programmes). I used to tell myself that I will watch those countdown shows to get in the mood but since a year or two ago, I have stopped watching them. That was a big surprise even to myself during the first year when I skipped. I actually did it, without feeling anything!

Those charity shows which I used to follow closely - I have also skipped a few rounds. I don't like the way they use their 'specialty acts' to rouse emotions for people to donate. They seriously overdo it and some even look very plastic that it irked me. I stopped watching and donating.

4. This is one thing I never thought I would feel today - I am a little sick and tired of my society, my country.

5. This one has not been proven but I may be on the way to losing lots of compassion in time to come. Don't try to use the 'I am a pauper and I have loads of kids waiting for milk at home' kind of tactics to get my empathy. I have lost them. I have been 'trained' by point 3 para 3, to the extend that the more you paint a pathetic situation, the more I get irked and irritated.

These are just some of the changes I found in myself (and for that matter, others too). Though they seem to be just minor issues in our life that change, but they are big changes I see in myself.

There could be many reasons for such changes. Perhaps, like people always say, age is catching up. Or it could be because you have faced certain situations repeatedly until you feel sick and tired, or numb. Or you have seen too many bad things that you have lost your faith in some of them. Or it could just simply be a life cycle, in general.

I do not know what's my reason(s). I just know that I am getting more and more negative.

Transport Fares To Be Reduced?

You heard it? Finally, something about reducing bus and train fares. I thought I read wrongly from Yahoo News. Looks like we will get fares reduction when recession sets it, but not when economy slows down. I wonder how long this reduction will last.

But for now, we wait to see how much is the reduction. Bus fare - by $0.02, MRT - by $0.01?

A good read - Subhas Anandan

I've just finished reading this book 'The Best I Could' by Singapore's best-known criminal lawyer, Subhas Anandan, which I bought from Popular Bookstore last Sunday!

It's a book written for the man in the street and of course, it's an easy to understand book. It can be considered part autobiography, part log of Singapore's criminal history. He shares insights into some of the high-profile and sensational crimes that he had handled and defended. Being a straightforward man, he pulls no punches with his comments, be it his disappointment with court decisions or calibre of people he had worked with. He was also very straightforward with his comments towards past and present presidents of the Law Society.

The cases which he had shared with pretty interesting and I had enjoyed reading them all. He gives some behind-the-scene conversations with criminals and though they have committed crimes, some still show a softer side of themselves.

Anyway, two of the paragraphs struck a cord with me. He was describing how one of the ex-presidents of the Law Society, Chelvarajah is being remembered for his courage in speaking out over Chief Justice Yong Pung How's demands to get things done quickly. This reminds me of our workplace where big bosses always want things fast, fast, fast!!! Here are the extract:

"...The Chief Justice wanted backlogs cleared quickly. He did not want justice to be delayed, all the time emphasising that justice delayed is justice denied. He was always rushing everyone. He wanted the law to be swift but in his enthusiasm, he did not take into consideration the practical problems lawyers face, for instance, when bringing in foreign witnesses in time for trials. No quarters were given. The registrar was given instructions to issue early dates and to clear the cases quickly. If people could not accept the dates given, the registrar was told to strike off the court action. It was getting to be a very serious problem.

"At an annual dinner held during his term as president between 1990 and 1992, where the Guest-of-Honour was then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong, Chelva made his speech. He took a dig at the Chief Justice, who was present at the dinner, when he said: "When we talk about justice delayed being justice denied, we must also remember that justice hurried is justice buried." There was practically a standing ovation for him because he had put it so aptly at the appropriate time. I think it took a lot of guts for the Law Society president to stand up and say that. Though enthusiastically received, his speech did not have any effect on the judicial administration. Cases were still being rushed but I feel Chelva made his point that evening."

I wonder when we, as administrators, can do the same thing to our big bosses. Quite slim chance partly because we don't have that calibre and partly because we don't have the guts. I also wonder what will push us to that end if we should really tell them off one day.

Between lawyers and doctors, I wonder which profession is more 'evil' and which is a harder nut to crack. Probably not much difference. They will always consider themselves as the cream of the crop with the smartest brain and show some kind of 'elitist' attitude.

Ox year resolution?

1. Learn to be a little 'evil'
2. Learn to be a little more selfish
3. Learn to be a little nasty
4. Learn to be less obliging
5. Learn to tell people off, especially to those who seriously deserve it
6. Learn not to be overly empathetic or compassionate, especially to those who don't deserve it

In fact, learn whatever no-so-good things that can help us survive in the face of the baddies!

I have seriously learnt that being too nice, too good does not really help one. It can sometimes backfire and harm us, or even cause harm to others without us meaning it.

Why should the selfish man be rewarded and get what he wants? Why should the kind soul be penalised and be rid of? What kind of stupid system are we in? Who or what are we helping? Who or what are we harming? I don't understand.

So, to be able to handle the bad, we must be along that line too.

Conclusion: No need to be too good a person.

Really can't find her

Xiaohei is still not found. Really don't know what to do next. I still feel so sore and sad. Fantasizing she will appear suddenly.

One of the mornings, I dreamt that I found Xiaohei just at the next block. I was so happy that I quickly called dad to tell him. Surprisingly, hubby also told me he dreamt that he and dad went looking for Xiaohei with dad driving the 'golf-cart' (dunno the exact name but the vehicle that people drives at golf course), but couldn't find. What a coincidence, on the same morning.

Will I ever see her again?

To a layperson, what's the difference between getting re-designated and being promoted ah?? Mmmm....why do organisations make so 'chim' (difficult) terms ah??

Wondering, wondering.......Still wondering.....

My Lunar Birthday

5 Jan 09 (Monday) was my lunar birthday (10th day of 12th month) and dad gave me a surprise when I came home after work. And here it is...

Simple yet yummy mee suah with 2 eggs. The eggs were great. Still a little half cooked. There was still the gummy sensation in the yoke. As we already had dinner outside (dad had earlier told us not to eat too much but refused to tell us what he had at home), we were quite full. So we rested a bit before we boiled the mee suah again. Shared it with hubby. :)

Here's dad playing his phone game while we ate at the table. Muah Chee was also kaypo-ing with our food.

Thank you, daddy! Muak!

Swensen's Firehouse Birthday Treat!

This is probably the third year since I started bringing dad to Swensen on his birthday to get the complimentary ice-cream. Can't resist but I wonder who has 'cheated' who? Swensen has made us spent on the food to get the ice-cream. Would be cheaper to go there and just pay for the ice-cream. Heeheehee.....But...all for the fun of it.
Happy Birthday to Dad again.

This is MY DAY!

Happy Birthday to ME!!! Goodness, 1 more year older. :(

No great wishes. Just hope for great health to my daddy and hubby. The past months have been very stressful and I was on the verge of breaking down...and up. What's more, the MIA of Xiaohei has definitely pushed the misery to the peak. Work is just work, but still it causes a big portion of the craziness and frustrations.

Well, the last para simply summarises my stresses and I just hope that in the coming year, they will also fall in place nicely.

Am still looking for Xiaohei and hoping for the day she reappears. She is my greatest heartache for now.

Happy Birthday to me again. :)

My dad's 70th birthday celebration

Decided to have a simple celebration for dad's 70th birthday which falls on 3 Jan. Well, since he has not gathered with his friends for quite a while, thought may be a good opportunity for a little gathering as well. And the outcome - we ended up with some representations from different groups (ie a bit of my family, hubby family, a bit of dad's friends from different groups, my friends, current neighbour, ex-neighbour). That's the best we can do for limited resources, heeheehee.....

We had buffet lunch catered by Yan Palace. I always wanted to try their buffet but no chances. Finally, finally. I would say their food taste better than some of the other caterers we had tried before. Moreover, it's a very old restaurant so I don't expect anything below average. Outcome - not too disappointing though some taste are based on individual preference. (Sh**! I forgot to take pictures of the spread. What a nerd I was!)

Friends for 30-odd years. My most familiar group. Been interacting with them since I was very very young. In other words, they see me grow up one lor. :)

My mum-in-law, brother-in-law and sis-in-law with my nieces and nephew. All enjoying their mango pudding, it seems. :)

Ex-neighbour, with her grandchild and my still existing neighbour who has very kindly lent us 8 pieces of chairs to cater to our guests. :)

Another dad's long-time friend, the physician and his wife.

Enjoying the plants? Thank goodness we have a reasonably wide enough corridor to hold some folks.

Hope we weren't too noisy to our next door neighbour. Paiseh. ")

Was a little sub-gathering among these friends as well, I think. Mmmm....most of them stayed in the 'northern hemisphere' (of Singapore, I mean).

Husbands of their wives (what rubbish I talking!)

Another group of the husbands of their wives (Stop the rubbish!)

This is my pal, Irene and her hubby, with their two precious. Can go visit her blog for more funny things lah.

My niece Amanda, with Kerin.

Here's dad's cake. The abacus. For him to count 4D, Toto winnings. Heehee :)

Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday to you.

Who took this pic ah???

Me have a share too, cos my birthday is tomorrow hor! Jie hua sian fuo. I also need the abacus to count my bonus leh. :)

.....................

Guess who is hungry??

Someone's very seriously posing for the pic wor!

In my haste, I had missed taking a pic with Bessie and family! Sorry my dear. :(

Time to cut the cake.

Continue to enjoy and talk.....

Yummy, yummy. What a fortunate kid. ")

Mei-mei too engrossed with her cake to pose. Heehee....Those are Nixon and Terry.

Who is that behind the green-faced monster, taking pic with Bessie ah?

Darel, Bessie and Amanda enjoying their food.

Stop playing...eat your food lah! :p

Yeah....a little party in the room. Shiok.

Here's our gifts. Thanks all for the nicey presents and angpows.
Hope you had a great afternoon with nice food. Happy New Year to you. Kids are going back to school tomorrow though.
1 Jan 2009 (9.54pm)

Happy 2009!

A very Happy New Year to all of you...May you have a great 2009 which is fun-filled.

My greatest wish is for dad and hubby to be healthy, Xiaohei to be found and work to be less burdensome.
May 2009 get rid of the 'suay-ness' of 2008.

Cheers.

Muah Chee's disappearing act

My hammie Muah Chee scared us by pulling the disappearing act from his cage this morning!

We went for breakfast and came back. Dad wanted to go disturb him and then he said Muah Chee is not in his cage. I thought he was hiding in the tube but no sign. And the gate to his first storey was not secured! Must have been me! I was cleaning up yesterday and I forgot to fasten it. How absent-minded of me.

We tried to hunt for it in the storeroom, under the sofas, behind shoe racks. I was worried that if he had gone to the kitchen, chances are he would fall into the drainage. I was thinking hard how to attract him if he was still surviving in the house.

Suddenly dad saw him and called us. I asked dad not to move so that Muah Chee won't run off! I tiptoed to where dad spotted him (beside our shoe cabinet) and there he was....standing there and looking up at dad! Hahahahaha...I slowly moved towards him, trying not to scare him into running away, then I caught him. I was so afraid he would bite me but I didn't care, rather than having him run away. Thank goodness he didn't bite. So I closed up, caught him and brought him back to his cage.

He dropped from the table top and I was worried he might injure his little limbs. Am still observing to see if he's limping. Looks ok so far leh. :)

Where is she?

Been searching for Xiaohei since 24 Dec afternoon. No sign of her at all! I went there 3 to 4 times yesterday at different times, and today about 3 to 4 times also. Getting worried again. I really have no idea where she could have gone to. We searched the benches, the bicycle parking area before the lift lobbies, shook the food container but ended up attracting other cats. Each search ended in disappointment and more worries.

I really miss my dear Chantek Xiaohei. She has been a princess at my block for a long long time and protected with so many people playing with her and patting her. Now they have suddenly relocated her to a new place. Could she have been living in fear and hiding somewhere I can't see?

Why can't people tolerate her? What kind of characters do these people 'possess'? What make them? She doesn't bite, she doesn't disturb. I am on the verge of swearing at them.

What other clues can I get from Town Council to help trace her whereabouts? I am really feeling very heartpain for Xiaohei. Will I ever find her and see her again? I really hope so. Ha, I will smack her backside if I find out she is enjoying life while I am here crying over her disappearance (I'd rather it's this). I just want to know she is well. I really can't let go. Too painful.

Wonder who and what can help me find her. Really miss her. Every time I come home, I still have the habit of looking around to see if she is running towards me or glancing at the door to see if she is trying to sneak into the house.

She is really a part of us. Will keep on looking for her.

Search for Xiaohei begins

The Town Council has replied to assure us that Xiaohei has not been put to sleep and asked for my contact number so that they can contact me. They didn't call so that I called the Property Officer who was always not available.

Finally she returned my call yesterday slightly past 11am. She said that they had brought Xiaohei to another block and release her there. The block is just across a street to ours. I was hopeful again. She commented that Xiaohei is very nice cat, doesnt bite. But they couldn't help it due to complaints. That I understand. I just want to find Xiaohei. I shared that I was very worried they would kill her. The officer replied that they are not so cruel to do that. I should have probed more as to who brought her there and which part was she let off exactly, etc but I didn't as I was full of excitement to know where to start looking for her now.

As we were given halfday on Christmas eve, I came back and decided to share this with one of my neighbours who loved Xiaohei very much too. I went to their home and told them. They also thought Xiaohei must have been caught and put to sleep. The mum told me their daughter was also very worried about Xiaohei and almost wanted to cry. They said they would go find her when they go out later.

I went home waiting for hubby to come back, then we went to those cluster of blocks to try to hunt for the silly gal at about 3-plus pm. We saw other cats but no sign of Xiaohei. We even asked one man who was feeding those cats there. As our description of Xiaohei was not very accurate so didn't really find out much. I was so stupid to have forgotten to show him Xiaohei's picture from my handphone. I brought with me the bunch of keys and the container of food and we shook those while walking hoping to attract her, as that was what we usually do when she was at our place. Whenever she heard those, she would come running to us. Anyway, after the first round, I was disappointed. My hope was raised when I found one at our next block thinking it was Xiaohei. After scrutinising it for a while, we confirmed that wasn't Xiaohei.

Had actually wanted to go with hubby again early this morning to find her again but he had to go driving range last minute, so I went on my own after he left at about 6am. I wanted to try at different times of the day. I went round those 4 blocks and carpark but still no sign. So after half an hour, I walked back home, disappointed and worried once again. Later on when's it's brighter, I will go again.

I hope she hasn't ventured out of those areas. I also hope she hasn't gotten into fights with or chased away by those existing cats there.

My poor Xiaohei, where is she? She will be the best Christmas gift if I find her today.

Bless me, bless Xiaohei.
